The Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga Combination of book covers

Perhaps one of the most popular authors of my time, Stephenie Meyer has made an impact on the world with her acclaimed books of the Twilight Saga. Millions of teenagers have raved about these books, expressing their love for Edward Cullen and their strong dislike of Jacob Black.

Yet, I ask of you - what is so great about this series? The characters are not fully developed, and are static throughout the whole series. The plot is overused and cliche. Overall, these books greatly lack in originality.

When I first began reading Twilight, I enjoyed the story. As I gradually worked my way through all four books, I came to realize that it’s not as great as it seems- what was said in four books, could have been said in just one or two. I realize that these books were the first of Stephenie Meyer, but nevertheless, she should have recognized the faults in her writing.

To summarize the basic plot of the Twilight Saga, xArtistic.Lovex has done a wonderful job in her Journal:

“Bella meets Edward. Bella falls in love with Edward. Edward saves Bella. Edward falls in love with Bella. Edward runs away. Jacob falls in love with Bella. Bella tries to kill herself. Edward tries to kill himself. Bella saves Edward. Jacob turns into a werewolf. Bella and Edward have a child. Edward turns Bella into a vampire.”

Is this not the basic story of Twilight? Add a few details, and you’ve written a book. Add a bunch of details, and you’ve written four books.

I took the time to view several discussion boards of the Twilight Saga, and most were created for the sole purpose of discussing your love for the books. Yet, there was one lonely thread which proclaimed the dislike for this series. It was not a surprise when I came to discover that the thread has been bombarded with comments as the following:

”Do you actually think that if you profess your hate for Twilight, there will be some monstrous conversion of Twilight fans to anti-fans? I am not at all saying that you are not entitled to your opinion, but seriously what is the point of discussing your dislike to Twilight? I’d imagine if you disliked it so much you wouldn’t want to spend your time talking about it.”

I couldn’t agree more with the previous statement, but why would you discussing your love for Twilight? After all, it is just a series of books.

I view the Twilight Saga just as I view any other book- a great accomplishment of the author. If you are able to publish something, then it ought to be good. People have varying opinions concerning everything in life, and Twilight isn’t an exception. Personally, I think that the Twilight Saga could have been a bit more developed and original, in the sense of plot and characters.

If you are looking for an easy read, this is the series for you - it’s to the point and easy to understand. As long as you don’t expect something that will change your life forever, you’ll most likely fall victim to the the love of Twilight.
