Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Hellboy II: The Golden Army movie poster
July 11th, 2008 marks the debut of a highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 Red hot sci-fi movie. Under all circumstances this movie should have done exceptionally well in the box office, and grossing just under 35 million in its first week, it certainly did. Leading the box office hits from the first week in its running, will Hellboy II: The Golden Army, be able to make it big in the following weeks ahead?
It was Saturday, the 12th when I was able to see this movie, just twenty-four hours after opening day. Come about forty minutes until the scheduled showing there was literally a line outside the actually theater where Hellboy two was playing. And this was forty minutes ahead of time; the showing before us was still playing!
After waiting in line and taking our seats, the usual upcoming summer blockbuster trailers started playing. Twenty minutes later and we were watching the opening credits for Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
The movie starts out with typed up information that the audience, had they been familiar with the first film, knew already. A picture of the adorable Hellboy as a baby adores the screen, which leads into a flashback at an old war camp with Hellboy at the age of somewhere around twelve years old. We learn all about what The Golden Army really is, thus thrusting us into the destruction and plotline of the movie.
The rest of the film is filled with action packed fight scenes, relationship problems, and death. By the end all fights have been won, relationship problems solved, and the deaths part of you're everyday life; you move on and you progress.
The CGI effects in this movie are phenomenal and stunning, as are the lands they visit. You'll be introduced to many new creatures, some like the Tooth Fairies and others like the Angel of Death; which is played by the same actor who plays Abe Sapien.
On a more touching level, this movie really dissects and lets the audience discover the relationship between Red (Hellboy) and Liz. Romance, love, loss, and emotions run wild between them; the first time you see either of them being during a huge fight between each other. But, by the end of the movie you know they both love each other, no matter how other people may see them or think of them.
Overall, this movie was all it was cracked up to be, I give it an eight out of ten, and an eight only because I have to wait until the third installment of this series to get to see Red and Liz's babies!
That brings me to the last subject of matter; the third film. Though nothing has been said, the director of the film, Guillermo Del Toro working on his next project called 'The Hobbit, a sort of sequel to The Lord of The Rings series, it's pretty much foreseen to the audience that they're will be a third film. Hints like Liz being pregnant with twins and the chilling words from The Angel of Death – "But you should know, it is his destiny to bring about the destruction of the earth. Not now, not tomorrow, but soon enough".
Hopefully none of us have to wait too long for the sequel; I'm already so excited to see it!
